Sri Lanka, Sept. 15 -- Residents of Nuwara Eliya have raised concerns over the risk of traffic accidents caused by ponies roaming freely on public roads while being used for tourism activities.

Dashboard-camera footage recorded from a vehicle travelling along a main road in Nuwara Eliya on September 13 showed an accident after a pony suddenly entered the roadway.

Residents said several similar incidents had been reported previously, with some resulting in serious damage to vehicles and injuries to people.

Although pony rides are a popular tourist activity in Nuwara Eliya, residents stressed the need for a proper regulatory mechanism to ensure such activities do not endanger motorists, pedestrians or other road users.
