Sri Lanka, Oct. 26 -- Democracy in Parliament is being destroyed by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne by not allowing the no faith motion brought against him to be debated, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman said today.

"The excuse made against not allowing the debate is that a court case is pending against the Speaker's conduct. However, former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena allowed the debate on the no faith motion brought against him despite there being a court case against his conduct with regard to the appointment of Deshabandu Tennekoon as the IGP in 2023," the MP added.

"The Speaker is killing democracy in Parliament by acting partially and preventing the Opposition from raising questions," he added.
