Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- The possible imposition of the death penalty for drug-related offences remains only a proposal, with no final decision having been taken by the Government, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday (11).

Speaking at the Cabinet press briefing, Minister Jayatissa said the proposal had been put forward by certain stakeholders during discussions on the country's escalating drug problem.

"It is only a proposal made by certain stakeholders. A final decision has not been taken," he said.

He added that the Government had yet to determine how such a measure, if approved, would be implemented.
