Court acquits accused in 1999 election-period bombing
Sri Lanka, Oct. 2 -- The Anuradhapura High Court acquitted the accused, who faced several charges in connection with the bombing of the residence of Ananda Weragoda, an Anuradhapura Food and Medicine Inspector, during the 1999 Presidential election period, citing contradictions in the prosecution evidence.
The case concerned an attack on Ananda Weragoda's residence, in which property damage estimated at more than Rs. 3 million was caused. At the time, Weragoda was also serving as an officer involved in promoting the United National Party (UNP) membership in the Anuradhapura District.
