Commonwealth Lawyers Association raises questions over Supreme Court proceedings
Sri Lanka, Sept. 8 -- In a nine-page report, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) Steven Thiru has raised several concerns over procedural fairness, transparency and the composition of the Supreme Court bench that heard petitions challenging the constitutionality of the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Thiru, who visited Sri Lanka at the invitation of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), observed the proceedings before the Supreme Court on September 2 and subsequently issued a report highlighting matters which, he said, warranted careful scrutiny in the interests of judicial independence and public confidence in the administration of justice.
