Sri Lanka, Oct. 9 -- The Constitutional Council (CC) today approved the appointment of Dr. Hemamal Jayawardene as a commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.

According to informed sources, the decision was reached following a division among members of the Constitutional Council, with Dr. Jayawardene and Dr. Jehan Perera receiving four votes each.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Ajith P. Perera, S. Sritharan and civil member Austin Fernando voted in favour of Dr. Jehan Perera.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake, MP Aboobucker Athambawa and civil member Wasantha Seneviratne voted in favour of Dr. Jayawardene.
