Sri Lanka, Aug. 11 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the award of contracts to two companies to supply coal to the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai for the 2026/2027 period.

The approval follows a Cabinet decision on March 30, 2026, to procure 2.28 million metric tonnes of coal, with a 10% variation, to meet the power plant's operational requirements.

According to the Government Information Department, the decision to source coal from two suppliers was taken to minimise the risk of supply disruptions and ensure uninterrupted electricity generation and energy security.
