BASL raises gratification concern over judges' tenure extension
Sri Lanka, Aug. 25 -- The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), in a Special Determination petition filed before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the proposed Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution, has raised concerns over whether the extension of the tenure and related benefits proposed for sitting judges could amount to a "gratification" under the Anti-Corruption Act.
The petitioners, BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and its Secretary Nalin De Silva stated that a serious question arises as to whether the proposed extension of the tenure and attendant benefits granted to sitting judges could constitute a "gratification" within the meaning of the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023, as amended.
