Sri Lanka, Aug. 5 -- A SpaceX rocket stage is expected to slam into the moon early Wednesday morning in a rare event that astronomers have been tracking for months.

The Falcon 9 upper stage, which launched in January 2025 to send two private lunar landers toward the moon, is now on course to impact the lunar surface at approximately 2:35 a.m. ET on Aug. 5 after spending nearly 19 months drifting through space.

While there's no danger to Earth, scientists say the collision offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the moon, and skywatchers may even have a chance to glimpse the aftermath.
