Sri Lanka, May 18 -- A total of 5,289 Tri-Service personnel have been promoted to their next respective ranks in line with the 17th National War Heroes' Commemoration Day, which falls today (18).

The Ministry of Defence said that the promotions were granted in recognition of the dedicated service rendered by members of the armed forces towards safeguarding the country and maintaining national security.

National War Heroes' Commemoration Day is observed annually on May 19 to honour the sacrifices and service of Tri-Forces personnel who contributed to restoring peace and protecting the sovereignty of the nation during Sri Lanka's conflict with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
