47 tortoises rescued from drought-hit pond in Kantale
Sri Lanka, Aug. 26 -- Wildlife officers have rescued 47 tortoises after they became trapped in a pond that had dried up amid severe drought conditions in the Kantale area.
Acting on information received by the Kantale Wildlife Office, wildlife officials carried out a rescue operation and safely recovered the tortoises.
The rescued animals were released into the Kantale Reservoir today (26), providing them with a safer habitat and access to water.
The operation highlights the impact of the ongoing dry conditions on wildlife and the efforts being made by authorities to protect animals affected by the drought.
