Sri Lanka, Sept. 10 -- Twenty-two passengers were injured after a private bus travelling from Medirigiriya to Colombo veered off the road and overturned into a canal in Minneriya early today (10).

The accident occurred at around 4:45 a.m. near Devala Bend at the 7th Mile Post along the main Polonnaruwa-Habarana road.

According to Minneriya Police, the injured passengers were rushed to Habarana and Hingurakgoda hospitals for medical treatment.

Police said the section of road where the bus veered off and entered the adjoining canal has been identified as an accident-prone location, with several previous road accidents reported in the area.
