SriLanka, Oct. 4 -- A 16-year-old student drowned after being swept away by a water current while on an educational trip to the Samanalawewa area, Police said.

The student was among a group of students from Monaragala who had travelled to visit Sabaragamuwa University and were later travelling towards the Kuragala sacred site.

According to Police, the group had stopped near the Samanalawewa Dam, where three students from one of the buses had gone to a nearby water outlet to bathe.

One of the students was reportedly caught in the current and swept away.

A search operation was subsequently launched by Police with the assistance of local residents, and the student's body was later recovered.
