Sri Lanka, Sept. 8 -- A 13-year-old schoolboy drowned in the Maha Oya near Yakabendiella, while his father, who attempted to save him, also got into difficulty.

The deceased, 13-year-old Herath Mudiyanselage Nimsara Pramod, was a schoolboy from Pinnakelewatta in Divulapitiya.

He had gone for a bath in the Maha Oya with his father and several others. When the boy got into difficulty, his father, Namal Bandara, attempted to save him; however, the father also struggled in the water and was unable to rescue his son.

Area residents pulled both the father and son to shore and rushed them to the Dambadeniya Base Hospital, where the boy was declared dead on arrival. The father was admitted for treatment.
