Sri Lanka, July 28 -- An elephant known as the 'Warakagoda Elephant' was injured after being hit by a tipper truck at Omaragolla, Melsiripura this morning while it was being taken to a procession.

A team of veterinarians is currently treating the animal on-site.

The elephant involved in the sudden road accident is known as 'Warakagoda Aliya' (the Warakagoda elephant).

Police said the accident occurred in the Melsiripura area of Kurunegala, where the elephant was hit by a tipper truck driven recklessly by a driver.

Necessary medical treatment is being provided to the elephant under the leadership of veterinary surgeons and investigations are being conducted by the Melsiripura Police.
