'Vasana' elephant to be used only for major peraheras
Sri Lanka, Sept. 7 -- The Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya has decided to restrict the participation of its 'Vasana' elephant to major peraheras in a move aimed at protecting the animal's health and well-being.
Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya Media Unit said the decision has been taken on the instructions of the current Basnayake Nilame, Arachchige Thilina Madusanka.
According to the Devalaya administration, the Vasana elephant had previously been used for numerous small-scale peraheras, including Kathina Pinkam held in different parts of the country.
However, the administration said frequent transportation and participation in peraheras, particularly in distant areas, could pose a serious threat to the elephant's health and safety.
