'Emission Eye' unit to crack down on smoke-emitting vehicles
Sri Lanka, Oct. 9 -- The Vehicle Emission Testing Programme has established a special unit, named the 'Emission Eye Unit', to identify vehicles emitting excessive smoke on public roads and take legal action against their owners.
Operating under the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), the unit monitors vehicles on the move and photographs those emitting excessive visible smoke to initiate enforcement action.
The initiative aims to strengthen roadside enforcement, following the integration of the Vehicle Emission Testing Trust Fund into the DMT.
Officers deployed at strategic locations in major cities will use photographs as evidence to issue maintenance orders to vehicle owners on the same day.
