Mumbai, Sept. 4 -- The West Bengal Directorate of Mines and Minerals has approved a joint reconnaissance survey to assess manganese reserves in Jhargram district, authorising a coordinated field investigation led by state run miner MOIL Limited. The formal clearance follows recent mineral and hydrocarbon activity in the state and forms part of a planned effort to map mineral potential across multiple prospective belts. The decision sets an administrative framework for a five day on ground study scheduled for mid September 2026.
MOIL will lead the field operations in coordination with the Geological Survey of India, the Indian Bureau of Mines and the Directorate of Mines and Minerals, with participation from the West Bengal Mineral Development and Trading Company Limited. Technical agencies have been requested to nominate suitable officers and geologists to participate in the joint reconnaissance and the state has asked the parties to finalise logistics and schedules in advance. The directive places responsibility for coordination on the MOIL chairman and managing director to ensure a unified programme.
The reconnaissance will cover identified manganese bearing areas within Jhargram, including Simulpal, Labani, Bhandarchua, Panchas Foot Khadan, Chauga Pahar and other specified localities where initial indications suggest variable mineral occurrences. Field teams will examine geological features, collect preliminary data and assess commercial and geological viability over the specified five day period, employing standard mapping and sampling methods. The survey aims to establish whether further detailed exploration is warranted in suitable sectors.
Following completion of fieldwork, MOIL is to compile the findings and submit a consolidated report for consideration by central and state exploration bodies which will determine subsequent exploration phases. The process is intended to streamline technical inputs from each agency and to provide an evidence base for decisions on resource development and potential investment. Officials expect the exercise to clarify the extent of manganese potential and to inform policy and operational planning without preempting outcomes.
