Mumbai, Oct. 8 -- Uttar Pradesh ranked first in India for rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana in September 2026, with 74,796 plants added during the month. Andhra Pradesh followed with 69,813 installations, while Maharashtra ranked third with 60,907.

Gujarat recorded 45,616 rooftop solar installations in September and Kerala reported 30,315. Uttar Pradesh installed an average of 2,493 plants a day and recorded its highest daily addition of 3,389 installations on September 30.

The state added 29,180 more installations than Gujarat and 13,889 more than Maharashtra during the month. Across India, 438,815 rooftop solar installations were recorded in September, with Uttar Pradesh accounting for approximately 17 per cent of the national total.

The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency is overseeing the state-level implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, including inter-departmental coordination and progress monitoring. Officials said the state government was promoting renewable energy expansion under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

As of September 30, 2026, Uttar Pradesh had completed 867,755 rooftop solar installations under the scheme, with a combined installed capacity of 2,911.39 MW. Gujarat remained marginally ahead with 870,152 installations, a difference of 2,397, while Maharashtra had completed 827,182 installations.

The scheme provides eligible domestic electricity consumers with a subsidy for installing rooftop solar plants and remains open until March 31, 2027. Consumers can apply through the PM Surya Ghar National Portal, with the programme intended to help reduce electricity bills and support the expansion of clean energy.
