Mumbai, July 15 -- Tripura's chief minister Manik Saha held a review meeting with the Union minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi to assess progress on National Highway development. The meeting focused on accelerating ongoing highway works, improving maintenance standards and identifying new projects to strengthen connectivity with neighbouring states and the rest of the country. Officials emphasised the need to remove implementation bottlenecks and to improve coordination between the state government and the ministry to ensure strategic projects are completed on schedule.
One principal outcome was approval of the alignment for the Churaibari-Champaknagar four-laning project, which the government expects will enhance regional connectivity and facilitate smoother movement of passengers and freight. Authorities noted that the proposed corridor will reduce travel time, improve traffic flow and support freight transportation while improving access to border areas. The project was described as important for enabling economic development by facilitating movement of goods and services and by strengthening links to markets and supply chains.
The discussions also addressed preservation of completed infrastructure through timely repairs and better maintenance practices to ensure safer travel and longer asset life. New proposals aimed at improving regional connectivity and supporting future economic growth were considered alongside ongoing construction activities. The chief minister highlighted that Tripura's National Highway network expanded from 198 kilometres in 2014 to around 923 kilometres in 2026, reflecting sustained investment in connectivity projects according to the Press Trust of India.
Road infrastructure has been identified as a key priority given the state's strategic location in the northeast and its growing role in regional trade, logistics and tourism, and both the centre and the state reaffirmed a commitment to time bound execution of highway works. Faster completion of National Highway projects was said to be essential for improving mobility, lowering transportation costs and enabling balanced regional development. As multiple projects progress simultaneously, the state is expected to witness significant improvements in road connectivity over the coming years, creating opportunities for investment and enhanced access to essential services for residents.
