Mumbai, Oct. 30 -- The Maharashtra government has set a 3.5-year deadline for completing Metro Line 12A, an 18.40-km elevated corridor connecting Manpada-Katai Naka to Taloja through Kalyan Phata. The project has an estimated cost of Rs. 138.56 bn and is intended to improve links between Kalyan-Dombivli and Navi Mumbai.

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the project at a meeting held at Mantralaya on Tuesday. Fadnavis instructed officials to complete the corridor within the stipulated period and accelerate work on other ongoing metro projects across Maharashtra.

The deadline follows delays affecting several Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) projects, many of which were launched in 2018 but remain incomplete. At its previous infrastructure committee meeting, the government had directed the MMRDA to observe 2027 as the Year of Metro and expedite pending work.

The proposed corridor will have 12 elevated stations and is projected to strengthen connectivity with industrial and logistics hubs. Officials estimate that it could reduce travel time by 40 to 50 per cent compared with road transport and serve approximately 474,000 passengers daily. The project is also intended to reduce commuting time, ease congestion and support more sustainable public transport.

The development includes a 6.93-km, four-lane integrated flyover and an 8.69-km, six-lane integrated flyover. Interchange facilities will connect the corridor with Metro Line 12 and the bullet train connecting link at Katai Naka, Metro Line 14 between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata, and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 at Amandut. Feeder bus services are planned at every station. The committee also appointed the MMRDA as the Special Planning Authority for the corridor and flyovers, and approved the transfer of government land in the project's influence area for development and fund mobilisation.
