Mumbai, July 2 -- Road construction has begun on the long-awaited motorable link between Nenuliang and Zapaliang in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, marking a significant infrastructure initiative for remote frontier communities. The project will provide connectivity to villages on the left bank of the Lohit River, including Khrangliang, Naraliang, Zapaliang, Rangam and Lamaliang. These communities have faced decades of transport challenges owing to absence of reliable road access. Officials have framed the work as a strategic step to improve movement of people and goods in the border belt.
Authorities indicated that the new route is set to facilitate access to education, healthcare and markets, and to reduce travel time for residents who now rely on riverine or foot routes. Constructing an all-weather road is presented as a practical measure to connect schools and clinics and to enable easier transport of essential supplies. The project is being advanced within the state's broader plan to extend infrastructure to remote areas. Local planning documents note logistical benefits for administration and disaster response along the frontier.
Local leaders characterised the scheme as more than a highway and described it as a way to build a stronger and more connected future for populations near the Indo-China border. The state minister responsible for the portfolio acknowledged contributions from chief minister and deputy chief minister and recorded gratitude for their continued focus on border development. She conveyed that the project reflects the government vision of delivering development benefits to every village regardless of terrain. Officials added that the road could create new opportunities for economic activity and for linking producers to wider markets.
Construction is commencing under established procedures and will involve mobilisation of materials and workforce into challenging terrain along the Lohit valley. Project timelines and technical details are being handled by the relevant departments, which have outlined phased execution to manage monsoon season constraints and to ensure sustainability. Community representatives are participating in consultations to address local needs and to coordinate access during works. The initiative will be monitored to assess outcomes in service delivery and regional connectivity.
