Mumbai, July 16 -- Indian Railways (Railways) has commenced land acquisition for a new depot to service Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets near Bengaluru. The move follows project approvals for expanding maintenance capacity to support long distance semi-high speed services. Authorities have initiated statutory procedures under the relevant land acquisition law and notified affected landowners. The announcement follows feasibility studies assessing operational needs for longer range services.

The depot site has been identified on the outskirts of the city to provide space for stabling lines, maintenance bays and workshops. The Railways stated that the facility will include inspection pits, equipment halls and administrative units to enable routine and periodic overhauls. Advanced diagnostic equipment and training facilities for technical staff will be incorporated into the design. Work is intended to reduce turnaround times and enhance operational reliability of sleeper variants of the Vande Bharat fleet.

The land acquisition process will involve compensation and rehabilitation measures in line with statutory provisions and local administration oversight. Detailed design, tendering and civil construction will follow once land clearances are secured and technical specifications are finalised. Compensation packages will be determined through consultations and in accordance with established rates and entitlements. The Railways has allocated resources for preliminary surveys and environmental assessments to ensure compliance with regulatory norms.

Officials indicated that the depot will support expanding intercity connectivity and help integrate newer trainsets into the southern rail network. The project will create jobs during construction and sustain technical roles for maintenance personnel once operational. Timelines for completion will be announced after procurement and site preparation are completed. The Railways said the depot will strengthen the maintenance ecosystem and support future fleet upgrades across the region.
