Mumbai, June 29 -- The Municipal Corporation of Prayagraj has launched an initiative to encourage households to install rooftop solar and to advance environmental protection and energy conservation. The scheme offers a 10 per cent rebate on house tax for homeowners who install panels and aims to reduce electricity expenses while increasing renewable energy use. The rebate will follow verification and a physical inspection of the installation by municipal officials. The measure forms part of efforts to make clean energy adoption more accessible.
As part of the campaign, the corporation will organise awareness and registration camps in municipal wards to provide information and assistance on installation and central and state schemes. Homeowners seeking the rebate must submit documentation at zonal offices, and the administration will verify installations before granting relief. Zonal offices have been instructed to streamline registration and to coordinate with service providers to facilitate installations.
The administration provided guidance on costs and subsidies, noting that installation costs vary by provider and that the average installation cost is estimated at Rs 60,000 per kilowatt (kW). A two kW rooftop system typically costs about Rs 0.12 million (mn), and eligible consumers may receive a subsidy of Rs 90,000 under national support schemes. A three kW system typically costs about Rs 0.18 mn and may attract a subsidy of Rs 0.108 mn, subject to scheme eligibility. The corporation said camps will explain financing options and subsidy procedures to interested households.
Officials said the campaign is expected to increase public participation and to deliver lower monthly electricity bills and reduced annual house tax for participating households. The Municipal Corporation encouraged residents to take advantage of incentives and to attend registration camps to support the city's sustainable development objectives. The administration plans to monitor uptake and to report progress to stakeholders as installations proceed. The programme aims to complement state and central measures to accelerate rooftop solar deployment and to create local jobs.
