Mumbai, Sept. 10 -- PETRONAS Lubricants India and Tata Motors have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a responsible collection and recycling model for used automotive lubricants. The two companies will pilot a structured and scalable system across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to support India's circular economy goals and align with the evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.
The collaboration combines PETRONAS Lubricants India's lubricant technology expertise and channel network with Tata Motors' extensive authorised service ecosystem to address challenges related to used oil management. The initiative aims to create a traceable process for the collection, storage, recovery and recycling of used lubricants classified as hazardous waste.
Under the pilot programme, PETRONAS Lubricants India will facilitate the aggregation and movement of used lubricants through authorised collection mechanisms, ensuring their transfer to registered recyclers. Tata Motors will leverage its authorised service network to enable organised collection and encourage responsible disposal practices across its ecosystem.
Speaking on the initiative, Binu Chandy, India Managing Director, PETRONAS Lubricants India, said the collaboration marks an important step towards developing a scalable model for used oil circularity, where re-refined base oil can be reintegrated into finished lubricants to reduce environmental impact.
Vikram Agrawal, Head - Spares and Non-Vehicle Business, Tata Motors Ltd., said the partnership reflects the company's commitment to responsible resource management and advancing circular economy practices across the automotive value chain.
The pilot is expected to strengthen benchmarks for sustainable waste management by improving resource efficiency, reducing environmental risks and supporting India's transition towards a resource-efficient economy.
