Mumbai, Sept. 8 -- The Bengaluru South City Corporation commissioner said a pilot to fit Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking on garbage collection auto tippers under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd using Brain Above technology has been successful. GPS devices were installed on 36 auto tippers in HSR Layout on August 13 and residents and non-governmental organisations reported a reduction in black spots over three weeks due to daily door-to-door collection.
He directed that GPS be fitted on all 208 auto tippers in the Bommanahalli zone by September 10 and that full scale tracking begin across the assembly constituency from September 11. Officials were instructed to complete route mapping in nine wards including HSR Layout, Hongasandra and Mangammanapalya so the public can track autos assigned to their streets through the Brain Above app.
He instructed contractors to deploy autos at night in high density black spot areas and to use marshals to persuade street vendors and shopkeepers in commercial zones such as the roads around Meenakshi Mall to hand over waste to collection vehicles free of cost. In narrow lanes where autos cannot enter, vehicles will halt at nearby spots for 10 minutes and collect household waste while using whistles to notify residents.
He directed that awareness be conducted for two to three days and that nominal fines be imposed for initial violations, with heavier penalties and vehicle seizure for repeat offenders who dump waste on roadsides at night. After door-to-door collection pourakarmikas and drivers must perform gang work in teams of 10 for five days a week until two pm to clear remaining black spots.
He ordered timely salary disbursement to pourakarmikas, auto drivers and contract staff and said contractor bills will be approved on the basis of GPS tracking data. Representatives from NGOs including Let's Be The Change, Saahas and HSR Citizen Forum and garbage collection contractors attended and the commissioner appealed to the public to cooperate by handing over waste only to corporation vehicles.
