Mumbai, Oct. 8 -- Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) rose by Rs. 1 per kg from October 1, taking the retail price to Rs. 89 per kg. The increase was announced by Mahanagar Gas (MGL), the region's largest CNG supplier, against a backdrop of the ongoing crisis in West Asia. MGL attributed the revision to higher costs of domestically produced gas and imported Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG).

The increase affects motorists and operators who depend on CNG for daily travel and commercial activities across Mumbai and adjoining areas. CNG is widely used by taxis, auto rickshaws and buses, in addition to private vehicles. The revised rate covers around 1,293,000 vehicles operating across the MMR, making the change relevant to a substantial number of commuters and transport operators.

MGL said the higher input gas costs had necessitated the price revision, while the increase would help ensure continuity of CNG supplies to customers. The company's revised rate applies in Mumbai and adjacent areas from October 1. Residents and commercial vehicle operators therefore began purchasing CNG at Rs. 89 per kg from that date.

The latest revision is the fifth increase in CNG prices in six months. It raises the fuel cost for vehicle owners and operators, while maintaining CNG's role as a commonly used fuel for public transport, taxis and auto rickshaws in the region. The change comes as the company responds to movements in the cost of both domestic gas and imported RLNG, which form part of its input supply mix.
