Mumbai, July 16 -- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has extended the deadline for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for solar inverters with capacity above 200 kilowatt (kW) until December 31. The notification sets the new end date to allow ongoing projects and manufacturers additional time to secure the required approvals. The change was issued to align compliance schedules with current industry workflows and administrative processes. The ministry emphasised that the extension does not alter technical requirements for safety and performance.
The extension covers grid-connected and off-grid inverters that exceed the 200 kW threshold and requires suppliers to obtain BIS certification before commissioning. Manufacturers will need to complete testing, documentation and conformity assessment procedures under the relevant BIS standards. The ministry indicated that partial compliance or provisional clearances will not replace full certification requirements. Suppliers already holding certificates for similar models were encouraged to submit equivalence documentation where applicable.
Industry participants welcomed the extra time as a practical measure to avoid disruptions to project commissioning and supply chains. Developers and original equipment manufacturers are expected to prioritise outstanding test submissions and certification audits to meet the revised deadline. Certification bodies have been advised to process pending applications efficiently while maintaining prescribed quality controls. Renewable energy consultants noted that clear timelines help protect investor confidence and reduce contractual disputes.
Stakeholders are advised to review project timelines and procurement schedules in light of the extension and to engage with accredited laboratories and BIS officials to expedite approvals. The ministry will monitor progress and may issue further guidance if operational bottlenecks persist. The extension aims to balance regulatory rigour with the need to sustain renewable energy deployment. Market analysts said predictable certification windows can support steady capacity addition and orderly supply chain planning.
