Mumbai, Nov. 2 -- The Ladakh administration has proposed setting up a State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) to strengthen grid management, optimise power flows and support a reliable electricity supply across the Union Territory. The proposal was discussed during a review meeting of the Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD), chaired by Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra.
The meeting assessed progress on power generation, transmission and distribution projects, renewable energy initiatives and measures aimed at maintaining energy security throughout the year. Officials discussed identifying a suitable location for the centre, finalising institutional arrangements and ensuring the availability of qualified technical personnel.
Kundra called for a comprehensive assessment of electricity demand and availability during both summer and winter. The assessment will consider seasonal hydropower generation, solar power availability, electricity procurement from external sources, power purchase agreements and the related financial implications.
The administration also reviewed ongoing and proposed hydropower and renewable energy projects, including the Takmachik project and Nimoo-Basgo. These initiatives form part of efforts to expand Ladakh's power generation capacity and improve the Union Territory's ability to meet changing electricity requirements.
Kundra directed officials to expedite the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), establish clear implementation timelines and strengthen project monitoring mechanisms. The measures are intended to support timely execution and improve the utilisation of Ladakh's power generation potential, while the proposed SLDC would provide a dedicated mechanism for coordinating electricity flows and managing the grid.
