Mumbai, July 15 -- The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to widen the proposed road along the Kharicut Canal corridor, opting for three-lane carriageways on both sides instead of the earlier nine point five metre design. The move aims to ease traffic flow, improve safety and enhance accessibility across the 12.7 km stretch from Naroda to Vinzol. The decision was taken during a site inspection led by Mayor Hitesh Barot, accompanied by the Standing Committee chairman, party leader and civic officials. Work will emphasise continuity of carriageways and better links to adjoining neighbourhoods to improve movement for residents and services.
The review prompted a redesign that had initially included nine point five metre roads, one point two metre green strips with tree plantation, service roads and footpaths. Under the revised plan AMC will develop three-lane roads flanking the canal, plant trees to create a green corridor and construct pedestrian-friendly footpaths. Junctions along the route will be upgraded based on traffic requirements and local conditions.
The project spans the 12.7 km stretch and will also include improvements to drainage and lighting where necessary to enhance safety and user comfort. Tree planting will focus on native species and will be positioned within dedicated green strips to provide shade and a buffer between carriageways and the canal. Footpaths will be designed to be accessible and continuous to encourage walking and improve last mile connectivity.
The civic authority plans phased implementation to minimise disruption and will coordinate with local stakeholders to finalise junction upgrades and construction schedules. Estimated timelines and budget allocations will be announced after detailed engineering and tendering processes are completed. Officials indicated the objective is to deliver a safer, greener and more accessible corridor that supports sustainable urban mobility.
