Mumbai, Nov. 2 -- The Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka), known as K-RIDE, has installed two 61-m girders at Major Bridge 470 on National Highway 44 near Chandapura. The work is part of the 48-km Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project.

Each girder weighs around 245 t, making the installation a significant engineering operation. K-RIDE said the girders were the longest it had installed for a railway doubling project in Bengaluru. The first girder was placed on 10 October, while the second was installed on Wednesday.

The structure has been designed to accommodate both railway lines on a common substructure. It will cross the highway without an intermediate pier within the highway span, allowing the road and rail infrastructure to operate separately.

The grade-separated crossing is intended to reduce disruptions to highway traffic caused by railway operations. It is also designed to support the planned 12-lane highway configuration, subject to the approved design and completion of associated works.

K-RIDE Managing Director Lakshman Singh said the arrangement would allow road and rail traffic to move independently and facilitate smoother movement on the highway. The railway and associated works are targeted for completion by January 2027.

The doubling project is expected to increase rail capacity for passenger and freight services on the corridor. It is also intended to strengthen connectivity between Bengaluru and Hosur, which have expanding residential, industrial and commercial links. The installation forms part of the infrastructure works required to improve the corridor's operational capacity and accommodate future traffic demand.
