Mumbai, July 17 -- The 110-year-old Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station has been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an approximate cost of Rs 1.25 billion (Rs 1.25 bn). The upgrade provides modern passenger amenities and a more comfortable travel experience. The project preserves the station's architectural heritage and includes design elements inspired by Punjab's culture.
The redevelopment features a 40-metre-wide steel-structured roof spanning 200 metres across the platforms and covering 8,720 square metres to create a weather-protected waiting area. A 36-metre-wide air concourse spread over 1,770 square metres now links both sides of the city and improves circulation. Two new foot over bridges, six metres and nine metres wide, have been added to ease movement. Energy-efficient LED lighting and slip-resistant flooring have been installed across passenger areas.
Station access has been enhanced with a 300 square metre second-entry building and a 4,855 square metre parking area to boost last-mile connectivity. Entry and exit have been enabled from both sides of the station to reduce congestion. The station manages an average footfall of 7,500 passengers a day and is served by 66 up and 66 down trains including two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains and several long-distance services.
Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu inspected the redevelopment ahead of a proposed inauguration by the prime minister and reviewed passenger amenities and safety preparations, according to Northern Railway. He instructed officials to ensure high standards of safety, security and passenger convenience. The redevelopment forms part of the Centre's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme under which 30 stations in Punjab have been selected for modernisation. Work has been completed at Anandpur Sahib, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar and Muktsar while upgrades continue at other stations.
