Mumbai, July 17 -- Jaisalmer Railway Station in Rajasthan has been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with work completed in July 2026 at an estimated cost of around Rs 1,400 million (mn). The redevelopment marries local architectural elements such as yellow sandstone and traditional Rajasthani motifs with modern passenger facilities. Project planners sought to balance conservation of historic character with requirements of a contemporary transit hub. The project aims to preserve built heritage while improving the travel experience for visitors and residents.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is an Indian Railways station redevelopment programme for phased modernisation of railway stations across the country. The scheme includes upgrades to station buildings, improved circulation areas, enhanced passenger amenities and integration of accessibility features for persons with disabilities. The scheme also emphasises efficient passenger movement and safety measures during peak travel periods. Stakeholders were engaged to ensure functional design and maintenance considerations were addressed.
The redeveloped station employs yellow sandstone elements associated with Jaisalmer's built heritage and incorporates traditional Rajasthani design motifs. Modern lighting and clear signboards have been installed to aid navigation and a digital passenger information system has been provided to relay arrival and departure details. Wayfinding improvements and user friendly layouts were introduced to reduce congestion and improve commuter convenience. Public signage follows bilingual formats to assist domestic and international travellers.
The station now offers lifts, escalators, modern waiting halls, upgraded sanitation facilities, improved parking and a foot overbridge alongside cloakroom facilities. Ramps and specially designed toilets for persons with disabilities have been provided to ensure accessibility. Jaisalmer is one of 15 redeveloped railway stations in Rajasthan serving passengers with upgraded amenities as of May 2026. Formal inauguration of the modernised station is awaited.
