Mumbai, June 26 -- Indian Railways has approved the rebuilding of the Shastriya Bridge in Indore at a cost of Rs 1.39 billion (bn), aiming to boost urban mobility and rail-road connectivity in Madhya Pradesh. The redevelopment will reconstruct Road Over Bridge No. 103-C in Indore Yard, a key route used by thousands of commuters every day. The project has been authorised as part of Indian Railways' wider programme to modernise road over bridges and related transport infrastructure across the country.
Planned as a modern four-lane road over bridge, the scheme features a 72-metre camel-back superstructure with prestressed concrete girders and a full viaduct arrangement to cope with rising traffic volumes. The bridge design includes six-metre service roads on both sides beneath the structure to support local traffic and maintenance activities. These elements aim to improve the movement of vehicles and make daily travel safer and smoother for residents.
The redevelopment extends beyond the bridge deck to include shifting and upgrading existing sewer infrastructure through new sewer lines to ensure uninterrupted drainage services. The plan also provides for the relocation and renewal of electrical infrastructure with new poles, lighting systems and related equipment to integrate utilities with the rebuilt structure. Civil works will be coordinated to limit disruption and to maintain essential services during construction.
On completion, the rebuilt Shastriya Bridge is expected to reduce traffic bottlenecks, improve road connectivity across Indore and strengthen links between railway infrastructure and the city transport network. The project will support the city's growing mobility needs and enhance commuter safety while contributing to broader efforts to modernise transport networks. The Ministry of Railways has positioned the approval as a step towards improved public convenience and safer urban travel.
