Mumbai, June 26 -- Indian Railways has approved a Rs 493 crore doubling project on the Adipur-Bhuj section in Gujarat. The allocated sum of Rs 493 crore is equal to 4,930 million (mn) rupees, equivalent to 4.93 billion (bn) rupees, and will finance the addition of a second line alongside the existing track. The project is intended to increase line capacity and provide greater resilience for both freight and passenger services in the region.
The works will involve laying an additional track over the designated section, associated civil works and upgrades to signalling and stations. The scheme will relieve bottlenecks by permitting simultaneous movement of trains in both directions, which is expected to shorten transit times and reduce delays. Indian Railways said the doubling will improve operational flexibility and facilitate better management of traffic flows on the route.
Officials noted that the enhanced infrastructure should support higher freight throughput, particularly for commodities moving to and from ports and industrial centres in the state. Improved capacity is also likely to strengthen passenger connectivity for communities along the line and support local economic activity by enabling more reliable services. The doubling is being introduced as part of a wider push to modernise and expand the national rail network.
Implementation will require coordination across engineering, signalling and operations teams and will involve phased work to maintain services during construction. The project documentation indicates attention to engineering standards and safety management while minimising disruption, and Indian Railways will oversee execution through its zonal and divisional offices. Stakeholders expect the doubling to deliver long-term capacity gains and to align with broader transport and development objectives for the region.
