Mumbai, Oct. 29 -- Work on the traffic-ridden Hennur-Bagalur Main Road in Bengaluru has been given a December deadline after missing several earlier targets. Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda reviewed the project and related drainage infrastructure during an inspection on Monday.
Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure (B-SMILE) is carrying out white-topping work on a 4.6-km stretch at a cost of Rs. 860 mn. The agency has also sought an additional Rs. 60 mn to extend the project by 600 metres. Work began in April 2025 and has drawn criticism from residents and motorists over its slow progress.
Gowda said road development should include efficient drainage, wider footpaths, safer pedestrian movement and supporting infrastructure to improve traffic flow. He directed officials to ensure drains function properly and rainwater moves freely, reducing waterlogging that affects pedestrians and motorists.
The minister also instructed officials to plan drainage upgrades alongside road construction and undertake repairs wherever necessary. He called for congestion at key junctions to be addressed through scientifically planned, location-specific improvements based on road conditions and traffic volumes.
The road is an alternative route to Kempegowda International Airport, and the government is examining whether an elevated corridor or shorter flyovers should be developed at congested junctions. KR Puram MLA Byrathi Basavaraj proposed a study of traffic movement between Geddalahalli Junction and Bagalur village, citing the growth of high-rise buildings and rising vehicle volumes.
Gowda said an earlier traffic study had found that a flyover was not necessary at this stage. An official said the government would assess whether shorter flyovers at selected junctions or an elevated corridor would be more suitable. If an elevated corridor is approved, it is likely to be tolled.
