Mumbai, Sept. 2 -- GMR Group (GMR) has said it will pursue overseas airport expansion, targeting West Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia as priority markets. The group indicated that GMR Airports operates six airports in India, including Delhi and Hyderabad, and operates one airport in Indonesia while developing an airport in Greece. It was noted that the Bhogapuram airport in Andhra Pradesh commenced operations on 17 August, marking a recent domestic milestone.
The chairman expressed confidence in the long term growth prospects of Indian aviation, citing rising incomes, expanding tourism, greater penetration of aviation infrastructure and supportive government initiatives. He conveyed that these structural trends should underpin demand for both passenger and cargo services over the coming years. The group therefore sees sustained opportunities to invest operational capability and commercial services that complement core airport concessions.
To capitalise on those opportunities, GMR has broadened its Airport Platform into capital light, airport adjacent businesses such as duty free, cargo, retail and food and beverage, and into operations and maintenance contracts. The group said it will prioritise an asset light approach to drive sustainable growth while maintaining financial discipline. Emerging markets in the targeted regions were described as offering significant potential for both concessions and adjacent services, subject to geopolitical and economic risks.
The company indicated it will continue to pursue new airport concession opportunities alongside expansion of its asset light portfolio and service offerings, aiming to strengthen recurring revenue streams. The strategic intent was framed as a measured international push, balancing growth ambitions with risk awareness in a volatile global environment. Observers were told that the approach seeks to position GMR to benefit from long term structural gains in aviation and travel.
