
Mumbai, Aug. 31 -- Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is upgrading its CCTV network with intelligent IP cameras that will be linked to the existing central CCTV network to allow live feeds and recorded footage to be monitored from a central location. The system will use video analytics to identify situations that could require intervention and will detect overcrowding, excessive queues, loitering and camera tampering while learning routine activity to flag unusual behaviour. The upgrade aims to improve passenger safety and operational awareness across stations.
The proposal places specific emphasis on track safety, with the system configured to generate an alert when a person is detected on the track or crosses a designated line in the absence of a train. The document notes that the track intrusion detection feature should operate with over 90 per cent accuracy. Operators will be able to search recorded footage by characteristics such as gender, clothing colour and age group, and a photograph may be uploaded to assist identification.
Person tracking is intended to continue across multiple cameras after initial identification, with the system presenting the route and timeline for monitored movement and designed to maintain continuity even if clothing changes during the specified period. A centralised dashboard will provide a consolidated view of camera status, recording servers, decoders and central servers, and will display CCTV-related events, alarms and alerts. The upgrade will integrate with the existing video management system to streamline operator workflows.
DMRC said the upgraded network will provide complete station coverage by combining the new IP cameras with the existing IP cameras, and the system will be connected to video walls at Metro Bhawan, Vinod Nagar Depot, IT Park and Shastri Park to facilitate centralised monitoring. The existing CCTV network comprises 2,531 analogue cameras, with Kashmere Gate currently equipped with 32 cameras, Barakhamba Road with 60, Mandi House 37, Karol Bagh 41 and Anand Vihar 50 according to the document. The CCTV upgrade is scheduled to be completed within one year and will be followed by a five-year defect liability period to cover faults.
