Mumbai, Oct. 13 -- The Delhi government has approved a Rs. 2.63 bn project to address recurring waterlogging in Kirari. The project will construct a nearly 4.5 km-long drain along the railway line, with completion scheduled for December 2027 by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.

The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved the proposal at a meeting on Tuesday. The drainage network is expected to benefit the Kirari, Mundka, Bawana and Nangloi Jat Assembly constituencies, while around 70 unauthorised colonies in Kirari are expected to receive improved drainage facilities.

The proposed drain will begin near Mundka Halt railway station and connect to the Supplementary Drain. It will have a carrying capacity of 760 cusecs, or cubic feet per second, and is intended to provide an outlet for rainwater accumulating along the railway line.

The areas identified for potential benefit include Rani Khera Industrial Area, Venu Enclave, Ratan Park, Rajdhani Park, JJ Cluster Colony, Rajendra Park Extension, Ram Nagar, Kunwar Singh Nagar and Nilothi village. The project is aimed at reducing the impact of waterlogging on roads, homes and local businesses during the monsoon.

Gupta said the government was pursuing a permanent solution to waterlogging rather than relying only on temporary measures during the rainy season. Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the project formed part of broader efforts to strengthen Delhi's drainage network and improve the movement of rainwater away from waterlogging-prone areas. The work is also expected to improve drainage conditions in Kirari and neighbouring constituencies.
