Mumbai, July 6 -- The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety concluded a three-day statutory safety examination of the remaining section of Corridor one, covering Kanpur Central to Naubasta. The inspection was led by Nilabhra Sengupta and a five-member team of experts, alongside officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation. The exercise concluded on 28 June.
The team carried out a trial run after stepping aboard at Naveen Market station, two stations before Kanpur Central, and examined the entire stretch to Naubasta. The inspection included signalling and telecommunication systems, civil structures, track stability and braking systems. It also covered electrical systems, traction power supply, rolling stock and emergency response mechanisms.
The team conducted dynamic and static tests to verify integration of systems and reviewed emergency response protocols and staff preparedness. Inspectors examined interfaces between signalling and traction systems to ensure synchronisation. The inspection was carried out in coordination with UPMRC technical teams to resolve any technical observations.
Earlier primary inspections of Corridor one had been completed, and following the statutory clearance the corridor will be fully operational from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta. The metro presently operates 14 stations and the addition will bring seven new stations into service. The stations to be incorporated are Jhakarkati Bus Terminal, Transport Nagar, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Baudh Nagar and Naubasta.
Corridor two, between CSA Agriculture University and Barra eight, remains under construction while the Detailed Project Report for a third line between Barra eight and Naubasta has been approved by the state government. Authorities have also proposed seven new corridors to expand the network. Officials said the opening will enhance daily travel options and strengthen urban connectivity in Kanpur.
