Mumbai, Oct. 28 -- Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for Yamuna rejuvenation projects valued at more than Rs. 89.41 bn in Delhi. The initiatives include expanding sewer networks and improving the drainage system, with the stated objective of reducing pollution in the river.
The projects are intended to strengthen wastewater treatment capacity, improve drinking water facilities and extend sewer connectivity across the national capital. The expansion of related infrastructure is expected to support a coordinated effort to address untreated waste and the wider environmental challenges affecting the Yamuna.
Shah said the BJP government was committed to cleaning and rejuvenating the river by May 2029. He added that the Centre, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments had prepared coordinated and time-bound action plans to tackle pollution and improve the condition of the river.
The Home Minister also criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, alleging that it had made excuses instead of addressing the Yamuna's condition. He reiterated that cleaning and rejuvenating the river remained a firm commitment of the BJP government.
The projects launched in Delhi form part of the government's stated effort to improve the river's supporting infrastructure. By focusing on sewage management, drainage improvements, wastewater treatment and wider sewer access, the authorities aim to address several of the systems linked to pollution in the Yamuna. The Centre and the governments of the three states are expected to implement their respective action plans within the announced time-bound framework.
