
Mumbai, Sept. 28 -- Adani Group has outlined investments of more than Rs. 1 tn across ports, logistics, energy, roads, green cement and data centres in West Bengal by 2035. Chairman Gautam Adani described the state as the group's eastern base and said its geography, talent and economic potential supported wider industrial development.
The announcement was made at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for Adani Arogya Mandir, a 2,000-bed healthcare and health city project in New Town, Kolkata. Spread across 51.75 acres at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub, the project involves an investment of more than Rs. 40 bn and is being implemented by the Adani Foundation.
The not-for-profit institution will include a multispeciality hospital, step-down facilities and transitional care services. It is expected to serve more than 200,000 inpatients and over 2 mn outpatients annually, while creating around 10,000 jobs. About 1,000 of the 2,000 beds will be reserved for economically weaker sections and covered through state and central health insurance schemes.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari laid the foundation stone and said the project would support medical tourism. He said Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports & SEZ, had discussed the hospital proposal after the chief minister took charge on May 9.
The group also announced support for the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat. It signed two memoranda of understanding with the state government covering restoration of the historic Writers' Building and the promotion of Kolkata's Durga Puja internationally through The Durga Puja Adani Preview.
Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce annual session, Gautam Adani said the next phase of India's growth should create new economic centres in the eastern region. He identified West Bengal as an important part of the country's ambition to generate its next Rs. 1 tn of growth.
