Mumbai, Sept. 4 -- The key equity barometers traded with modest gains in the early afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 23,900 level. Private bank shares extended gains for the second trading session.

At 12:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex jumped 559.63 points or 0.73% to 76,712.49. The Nifty 50 index added 72 points or 0.30% to 23,943.15.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index added 0.09% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.29%.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2,337 shares rose and 1,817 shares fell. A total of 243 shares were unchanged.
