Mumbai, Oct. 16 -- The Indian rupee appreciated 20 paise to 94.79 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday on softening of the American currency and the positive impact of the RBI' structural forex interventions. Lower US treasury yields also supported the domestic currency. However, elevated crude oil prices and decline in equity markets restricted the rupee's sharp gains. Indian shares were modestly higher in choppy trade on Friday after posting strong gains in the previous session, led by banking and information technology stocks. The benchmark 30-share BSE Sensex was up 237 points, or 0.32 percent, at 74,552 while the NSE Nifty index rose 109 points, or half a percent, to 23,115.
