Mumbai, Sept. 15 -- Retail sales in China went up 0.4% in August, Tuesday's report from the country's National Bureau of Statistics showed.

The figure was lower than expected and came in lower than the previous month's 0.6% rise.

Retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas were up 0.2% year-on-year, while those in rural areas were up by 1.6%.
