Nairobi, April 30 -- Residential rental property owners could face mandatory registration on a newly rolled-out tax portal if a proposal by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is adopted.

In the newly published Draft Income Tax (Residential Rental Income Tax) Regulations, 2026, KRA proposes that persons subject to rental income tax be required to register on an electronic platform known as the Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS). The move is part of a strategy to seal leakages in residential rental income tax.

If adopted, this would mark a shift from the current arrangement, where registration on eRITS is not mandatory and residential rental property owners largely rely on self-declaration through iTax.
