UNMOGIP: Past its Purpose
Srinagar, Oct. 10 -- The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) belongs to a diplomatic chapter that has long outlived its relevance. Established in 1949 to monitor the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir, the mission continues to operate despite profound changes in the regional security landscape and India's position that its mandate was overtaken by subsequent bilateral agreements.The 1972 Simla Agreement fundamentally changed the framework governing India-Pakistan relations. Both countries committed to resolving their differences through peaceful means and bilateral negotiations, while respecting the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
