Srinagar, Aug. 14 -- Jammu and Kashmir recorded 35 per cent surplus rainfall in July, receiving 259.7 mm against the normal 192.6 mm. The figure may appear comforting after months of deficient precipitation. But the real climate question is not how much rain falls-it is when, where and how intensely it falls. The July average hides sharp variations. Baramulla recorded a 165 per cent surplus, while Ganderbal and Pulwama received more than double their normal rainfall. Srinagar and Anantnag were 71 per cent above normal, even as Shopian remained 40 per cent deficient. Such contrasts point to a worrying shift towards increasingly erratic weather patterns.
