Srinagar, Aug. 30 -- The devastating flash floods in Nepal are yet another warning that the Himalayan region is entering an era of growing climate uncertainty. While the immediate disaster may be far from Jammu and Kashmir, its message is unmistakably close to home: a warming Himalaya is becoming a more fragile Himalaya. J&K is surrounded by a complex network of glaciers, snowfields, steep valleys and fast-flowing rivers. Rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt, altering river behaviour and increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides and sudden flash floods.
