Bangladesh, May 22 -- The prime suspect in the alleged Bakalia child rape has "confessed" to his crime in court, a day after his reported crime triggered violence between law enforcers and local residents in Chattogram.

The 32-year-old decorator shop employee gave his "confessional statement" before the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique on Friday afternoon, police said.

"During initial interrogation, Monir admitted to raping the child. He was produced in court, where he repeated his confessional statement," said Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan, deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police.

The magistrate ordered Monir to be sent to jail, the police officer added.
